Microsoft planning updated UI for Windows Update

Posted by nickggr on July 16, 2009

Beginning next month Microsoft will start an upgrade to the Windows Update and Microsoft Update services. Microsoft plans to start the infrastructure update in late August, claiming “it will take a couple of months to complete the rollout.” The update is required to “maintain and improve service quality, reliability, and operations.” The update will simply improve the user interface for Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 computers running Windows Update, adding a more visible and detailed description of updates as well as improvements in how users are notified about service packs. If you currently apply your updates automatically then this update will not modify the look and feel of Automatic Updates.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 review

Posted by nickggr on July 16, 2009

lenovo-ideapad-s10-2-3

lenovo-ideapad-s10-2-1

After a first version suitable, Lenovo released a small update to its NETBOOK. On paper, the only significant change is the abandonment of port Express Card 34 mm (it was one of the only to have such connections) for a chip 3G/3G +. A NETBOOK coming in rank?

Design side, Lenovo has chosen lightness. The white hull of the version we received is wearing a gray ground which gives it a more casual look than some of its austere colleagues. While not as good as the Toshiba NB200 and other luxury models, the bodywork is good. In the proper standard, nothing more.

If we had the opportunity to test the product in a foreign version, with a 3 cell battery, Lenovo is well aware that the market is tough on the European continent. The manufacturer should finally market its IdeaPad S10-2 cells that version 6. This is not wrong, the battery cell 3 that has given 2 hours and 4 minutes to hours of our test protocols. The 6-cell should roughly take about 4 hours. This puts the laptop in the average.
Good weight, good eye

In version 3 cells, it weighs 1 kg small. And only 1.2 kg in 6-cell version. Although not a true champion of the lightness, the S10-2 is doing a good job. Ditto on the LCD and keyboard, classical, the two elements are of high quality and very functional. Again, the machine can not be distinguished from the competition with a larger screen or a keyboard with keys spaced, but gives a partition already played but quality.
3G in the trunk

It is behind the battery that you can plug a chip to have the 3G mobile. What’s new? Nothing, except we did not pay a lot extra to enjoy the technology, unlike many other brands. If you’re tired of dragging your USB adapter, the S10-2 may be a good option.
Verdict: IdeaPad S10-2

By the choice of 3G standard, Lenovo could have put the emphasis on autonomy in order to ensure long working hours without a single cable. But the only Chinese brand NETBOOK a pretty, pretty well done, but without any real flavor.

Microsoft stores to open beside Apple stores

Posted by nickggr on July 16, 2009

As previously reported right here on Neowin, Microsoft is opening up retail stores this coming fall season, just in time for the Windows 7 October 22 launch time frame. Many of the Microsoft stores will open up right near Apple stores to compete with the popular Apple retail chains. Microsoft is slow to get into the market of having its own retail chain, which will sell all of their own products, much like Sony and Apple currently do. Not many details have been released on what the store will contain or what type of hardware, if any, they will make available for sale.

Official Google Voice Apps Arriving for Android, BlackBerry Phones [Mobile Apps]

Posted by nickggr on July 16, 2009

Update: The Android app has rolled out; more on the BlackBerry app to come. Google Voice executives told CNET and TechCrunch last night that official Google Voice apps would be available today for Android and BlackBerry phones. The apps, due this morning, mainly route handset calls through the Voice service, so those on the other end see your Google Voice number, so the caller isn’t forced to dial their own number first or make every call through Voice’s web site to get the same effect. Voicemail transcriptions will also be available through the official apps, and on Android handsets, call logs and contacts are integrated with the service. iPhone users may have to wait a bit, but a Google Voice manager says they’re working on an app. The service remains limited to those who’ve received email invitations, but Google says they’re rolling out steadily. We’ll have more when the apps arrive. [via Gizmodo]

Update: GigaOM has additional pictures of the apps’ SMS and visual voicemail functions, along with a pretty strong review.

Bing takes market share away from Yahoo

Posted by nickggr on July 16, 2009

Data from ComScore is showing that Microsoft's Bing search engine is taking market share away from Yahoo in the US market, reports IT Pro. The latest data shows that Microsoft captured 8.4% of US internet searches in June. That's up from 8% last month. Yahoo's market share fell to 19.6% in June, down from 20.1% in May. Google's market share remains at 65%. “Given all the publicity and advertising around Bing, we were expecting a month-on-month increase.”, said Citi analyst Mark Mahaney. But he also cautions that it's too early to see whether there's a trend or not.
